Experience

Expectations

The topic covered in our training course was The Flipped Classroom. It consists of a pedagogical approach in which the methodology moves from the traditional classroom learning space to the individual learning space. By using technology the teacher guides the students into a more interactive and personalised way of learning. The four pillars of the Flipped Classroom model are:

  • Flexible environment
  • Learning culture
  • Intentional content
  • Professional educator

Course objectives

The course objectives were to introduce flipped classroom concepts and theories first, then to present some effective applications in order to implement the new approach in the classroom and finally to provide trainees with hands-on workshops on planning and realizing modules following the flipped classroom model.

Experience

Our teacher, presented us with a selection of the most effective applications to be used in interactive and creative lessons such as: Jambord, Kialo, EdPuzzle, Lyricstraining, JeopardyLabs, Classroomscreen and Flip.

She gave us suggestions on how and when to use them with students’ groups and we reflected on the aim of using different applications for Flipped Classroom. We tried out the application “Flip” in order to experience its pros and cons. Actually, it proved to be quite useful since room for students’ individual or group work in class is provided therefore everyone can work at their own pace and the weaker students can benefit from the teacher’s help. Consequently, the learning time is maximized.

The course offered also a deep insight into Irish history of emigration and culture. The guided tour of the city of Dublin was organized at the beginning of the course and a really interesting visit to the EPIC museum of Emigration concluded our activities on the last but one day.

The cultural activities were also the basis for a video lesson each of the trainees prepared as a flipped model of teaching using one of the newly introduced applications.

Feedback

All participants felt they learnt a lot both in academic terms as well as in cultural awareness and insight.

Last but not least, the participants went on and worked very well together and given the short time during which they cooperated, they established excellent relationships that might be exploited in the future.
